Inspiring Story of Ajai Chowdhry Building HCL into a Billion-Dollar Company

Dr. Ajai Chowdhry is a name synonymous with success today, renowned as the co-founder of HCL, a pioneering company in the field of software technology. However, the path to building such a formidable enterprise was far from easy for Chowdhry.

It was a journey marked by relentless hard work, countless victories and defeats, daunting challenges, and unwavering criticism. Despite these obstacles, he persevered, ultimately achieving remarkable success and leaving an indelible mark on the world.

From a young age, Dr. Ajai Chowdhry understood the paramount importance of education in shaping one’s life.

Born into a family where education held great value, with his father serving as an IAS officer, he spent his formative years in Mount Abu. However, following a transfer, he relocated to Jabalpur, where his childhood continued.

After schooling, Chowdhry was to become an engineer because no one in his house was an engineer. So he took admission to a government engineering college in Jabalpur in Electronics and Telecom.

After this, he got advice from his brother to learn marketing and sales. Then he learned these things also, and after college, he got a good job at DCM Company. Here, Dr. Ajai’s salary was Rs 600 per month.

From a Job of Rs. 600 to Co-founding a Company

Every decision holds immense weight in shaping an individual’s journey, a truth exemplified in the life of Dr. Ajai Chowdhry. Following his employment, he harboured ambitions of establishing a software company. Joining him in this venture were visionaries like Shiv Nadar and Arjun Malhotra.

Despite lacking financial resources, Dr. Ajai’s determination remained unwavering. It was his mother’s belief in his dreams that provided the initial capital; she contributed Rs 11,000 to kickstart the company.

After pioneering computer manufacturing in India, Chowdhry ventured to Singapore, where he encountered a job opportunity offering incentives based on computer production.

However, he faced adversity abroad, as Indians were not always esteemed, resulting in numerous challenges.

Undeterred, he alongside his partner, journeyed to the United States. There, they engaged with computer manufacturing companies, fostering partnerships and advancing their business endeavours.

Further expanding his business horizons, Dr. Ajai Chowdhry ventured into partnerships with China, despite encountering significant resource shortages in the region.

Despite the challenges, his endeavours proved successful, contributing to his growing achievements. This period coincided with a time when India had only 100 computers, prompting him to focus on pushing technological boundaries even further.

Subsequently, he extended his business interests to Malaysia, seeking to leverage new opportunities for growth and innovation.

Success Story of HCL Technologies

In the 1980s, purchasing computers was a daunting task for many due to their exorbitant prices. Recognizing this barrier to access, Ajai Chowdhry introduced the EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) scheme, making computers more affordable and accessible to the public.

His initiatives revolutionized the electronics market, facilitating widespread adoption of computing technology. Additionally, Dr. Ajai’s collaborations with global giants like Motorola and Nokia furthered his impact.

Notably, he played a key role in bringing the Nokia 1100 to the Indian market, significantly reducing its price to cater to the needs of Indian consumers.

In the wake of Nokia’s rapid expansion in India, coupled with HCL’s burgeoning success, Chowdhry’s influence in the technology sector soared. As Nokia’s business flourished, its products, notably the Nokia 1100, became iconic symbols of affordability and reliability in India.

Concurrently, HCL’s trajectory mirrored that of Chowdhry’s entrepreneurial journey, experiencing exponential growth. Today, amidst the ups and downs of his career, Dr. Ajai stands as a testament to perseverance and success in the face of adversity.

Dr. Ajai Chowdhary has recently released his book ‘Just Aspire’ reflecting on his life and the challenges he went through while starting up the billion-dollar company, HCLTech.
