What is Orange Economy? PM Modi addresses its stakeholders at WAVES 2025 Summit

While addressing the first-of-its-kind World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 in Mumbai, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the young creators who are driving India’s ‘Orange Economy’ forward. Here, this term meant the creator economy consisting of social media creators and entrepreneurs in the media and entertainment industry.

WAVES Summit 2025, held from 1-4 May in Jio World Centre, Mumbai, is the inaugural event aimed at promoting discussions, collaboration, and innovation in the media and entertainment industry.

The event hosted most of the top content creators, media legends, and industry leaders to discuss prospects, challenges, promote global trade and influence the sector’s future. Prime Minister Modi addressed the stakeholders on the first day, championing the ‘creator economy’ that is growing day by day influencing the global culture.

What is the Orange Economy?

The Orange Economy, also known as the creative economy, refers to the economic activities relying on creativity, culture, media, entertainment, and digital IP (Intellectual Property).

It includes digital content, filmmaking, performing arts, music, fashion, design, advertising, gaming, animation, digital publishing, cultural tourism, and all other knowledge-based activities that rely on creativity and talent.

The creator economy, often referred to the digital content creation space, is just a part of the larger orange economy encompassing the entire media and entertainment industry and other creative fields.

The term ‘orange economy’ was first coined by former Colombian President Iván Duque Márquez and former Culture Minister Felipe Buitrago, a colour which resonates across cultures in creative, religious and cultural spheres.

What happened at the WAVES 2025 Summit?

World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 was the first-of-its-kind event around media and entertainment that attracted industry leaders from over 100 countries, opening up a discussion around the creative economy.

The content creators also got a chance to make their presence count, as the digital content creation has been at its peak in the current time. PM Modi even addressed them to ‘Create in India, Create for World’ — highlighting the scope of content creation in the coming years.

“It is the dawn of the Orange Economy…content, creativity, and culture are the three pillars of the Orange Economy”, he added, highlighting that the rise of India’s creative economy is just beginning.

He also said, “WAVES is not merely an acronym but a wave representing culture, creativity, and universal connectivity”.

Despite being the inaugural event, WAVES 2025 seems to be a great success in bringing together all the stakeholders of the media and entertainment industry, offering a global platform for artists and creators to connect and collaborate.
